ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., is denouncing President Trump’s announcement that the U.S. will purchase diesel from Russia in an effort to lower fuel prices.
President Trump took to Truth Social last week announcing that Russia will immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global marketplace.
Since the president made his announcement, a bipartisan group of senators released a statement urging the president to reverse course.
On Monday, Senator Martin Heinrich, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee denounced the plan.
“We don’t do business with Russia, full stop,” said Heinrich.
Heinrich said he didn’t think the diesel purchase from Russia would have an impact on American prices. He noted refining capacity impacted by war in the Middle East has caused high prices.
“I don’t think this a real thing, I think this is a rhetorical distraction from the fact that some people are paying 6 dollars for diesel,” said Heinrich.
