CARRINGTON (NewsDakota)- It just would not be a Carrington home softball game otherwise.
After Harvey/Wells County took a 6-0 lead, the Cards came all the way back, capped by a walk-off solo homer from Ella Volk leading off the bottom of the seventh inning as Carrington snapped their four game losing streak with a 9-8 win to complete the regular season on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets (10-7) started quickly as Ashley Bartz and Ava Kara delivered RBIs in the first and it was 2-0. In the third, a bases-loaded three-run double by Rebecca Copenhaver extended that lead to 6-0.
But then, as in every other home game in 2026, the Cards (6-7) responded. Kambry Linderman drove home Lauren Hendrickson in the fourth with a double and later scored herself in the inning and it was 6-2. In the fifth, Maara Kutz delivered Hendrickson with a single to make it 6-3 after five innings.
After Harvey/Wells County added a pair more in the sixth, Carrington went to work. Brina Wolsky and Aubrey Neis singled then Hendrickson walked and Bailey Ness was hit by a pitch to reduce the deficit to 8-4. Kutz then laced her own bases-clearing double down the left field line before later scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8.
That set up the seventh after freshman Brina Wolsky got out of trouble in the top half, Volk ripped an 0-1 pitch over the right center field wall to win the game. It was her first career regular season homer, first career walk-off hit, and the second home run of her career overall (May 19, 2025 vs Pembina County North- R2 Elimination Game).
Carrington will open the 2026 NDHSAA Region 2B Softball Tournament at home on Saturday, hosting Northern Lights with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal and YouTube beginning at 12:45pm.
