Error Prone Cardinal Softball Falls To Thompson

MAYVILLE (NewsDakota)- “Too many mistakes”. That is how Carrington softball coach Brady Smith described a wild, back-and-forth game for the 1-seed in Region 2B South on Monday night.

The ninth Carrington error of the game scored the winning run in the last of the seventh inning and the Thompson Tommies rallied from six runs down for a 12-11 walk-off win to clinch the divisions’ top seed.

Carrington (5-7, 3-1 Region 2B) got off to a fantastic start, with Ella Volk doubling home Maara Kutz in the first for a 1-0 lead.  In the second, the Cards scored five times, capped by Calleigh Hewitt’s 12th career home run, a two-run shot to left field for a 6-0 lead.  But Thompson (12-4, 7-0 Region 2B) rallied with three in the second inning, including a run-scoring single by Cynthia Eliason to cut the lead to 6-3.

In the fourth, Carrington responded with three more runs, including RBI from Hewitt and Kenedy Trostad for a 9-3 lead.  Eventually the Cards led 10-5 to the last of the sixth before the Tommies rallied with a six-run frame, capped by Abigail Olson’s go-ahead three-run homer for an 11-10 lead.  Kambry Linderman then reached with one out in the seventh and advanced to second.  From there, a wild pitch saw her go towards third, and the throw got away from Kya Hurst for the Tommies seventh error to tie the game at 11.  But in the home half after an out was recorded, Mya Warcken singled and scored on a single plus error from Kya Hurst to end the wild game.

Carrington conclude the regular season on Tuesday at home against Harvey/Wells County with coverage on KDAK The Cardinal & YouTube beginning at 4:15pm.
