The Last Go Go Dancer Sign In Wyoming, Maybe America

For years, I drove by this sign in downtown Cheyenne, Wyoming, and thought, ‘ Wow, that goes way back.’ Honestly, when was the last time you heard of “GO GO DANCERS?”

The term “go-go dancer” was introduced in the early 1960s and became popular by 1964–1965. While originating from the French phrase à gogo (meaning “in abundance”), the specific role was popularized by the Whisky a Go Go club, which opened in West Hollywood in January 1964.

The term became widely associated with dancers wearing short, fringed skirts and high boots, soon termed “go-go boots”.

The Green Door, a Cheyenne, officially became a strip club in 1975 and operated as one until 2024. That means that this sign has been up for 51 years, as of the writing of this article.

Even after the go-go craze ended and the term was all but forgotten, the club kept the sign up.

After the closing of the Green Door after the owner died in 2024, the sign stayed until a winter windstorm in 2026 broke the western side. Now only the eastern side survives.

The Green Door Lounge was named one of the “worst” in America by Maxim Magazine while becoming a staple of local urban legends, including a one-legged stripper. Other stories were of a one-armed stripper.

The building is still empty and is for sale. I imagine it being torn down for something else at a later date. But right now, Cheyenne has several old businesses along Lincoln Way that have been abandoned for years and need to be cleared for something new.

That means we might be looking at what is left of this old GO GO DANCERS sign for quite a few more years.

A bit of nostalgia has brought back a few go-go dancing nights in America, mostly in major cities like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and NYC. The classic 1960s-style go-go bar has vanished.

There’s a strange mind at work in Medicine Bow. Someone equal parts disturbed and delighted, scheming and laughing at the same time. And somehow, they want to pull you into the fun.
