CAPITAN, N.M. — The Seven Cabins Fire, linked to a deadly medical plane crash in the Capitan Mountains, has more than doubled in size, as of the latest update.
The fire is 6,361 acres in size, as of Sunday morning. That is up from 2,645 acres Saturday evening. Fire managers blamed “significant winds” for spreading the fire to the northeast and expect a repeat Sunday.
Managers anticipate 50 mph winds will push the fire toward Highway 246. They said firefighters will try and use the highway to stop the fire’s run.
The fire is still 0% contained. There are still 226 people assigned to working the fire.
Personnel will be working in areas such as Pine Lodge on the east side of the fire where homes and other places are at risk. They’ll also work the Shippy Ranch and Angel Ranch areas on the west and northwest sides of the fire to prepare homes for fire and protect them.
Aircraft will be working the fire with aerial fire suppressant drops to prepare and protect buildings at risk. They anticipate there will be “lots of moving parts” in and around Capitan and Highway 246.
