CASPER, Wyo. — David Street Station was packed to the brim on Saturday, as Funky Junk returned to downtown Casper for its annual Spring Edition.

People from all walks of life came downtown to experience the sites, sounds, and shopping of Funky Junk, and they didn’t leave disappointed. More than 120 different vendors were on hand selling clothing, accessories, food, drinks, arts, crafts, and more. It was a celebration of shopping local and the people responded in kind. Throughout the entire day, hundreds of people packed the David Street Station. And very few left empty-handed.

“My favorite part of Funky Junk is just watching it all come together,” said Whitney Asay, the creator of Funky Junk and the executive director of David Street Station. “Like, there’s so much planning that goes into it that no one really sees. It’s behind thee scenes. We popped this event up in a matter of four hours, and it’s gone in another two-and-a-half, like it never existed. So I like watching everything coming together.”

Asay says that, this years, Funky Junk secured actual sponsorships, as well as a grant, which allowed them to add some really cool things. They were able to spend more on musicians, there was a 360 photo booth and a Yao photo booth, and more.

“It’s my favorite day,” Asay said. “It’s like Christmas morning.”

And what would Christmas morning be without the gifts? Dozens of vendors were on hand, selling their treasures. Whether it was a shirt, a necklace, a pair of earrings or a piece of fudge, there was something for everybody at Funky Junk.

“We’re really trying to curate something new and different,” Asay said. “This kind of falls between a craft fair and the Nic Fest, which is like a full-blown fine arts event. We’re trying to capture that art market and just create something different and unique.”

Funky Junk was definitely different and unique for attendees. It was like a daylong festival but, even more than that, it was a chance to be a part of a community. Friends and families gathered there. Boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives — they held hands as they strolled through the area. It was a sight to behold and it was something that organizers and attendees alike will remember forever.

Or at least until the next one.

“Just come be a part of the community,” Asay said. “This event really does have something for everyone. It’s free to attend. There’s amazing music all day, really great food. It just supports so many local businesses. For some of them, this is their only job and for some, they’re trying to make it their only job. So come, take it all in, and just support our community.”
