Ex-NMSU athlete skips sexual assault trial, possibly living in Dubai

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A judge issued an arrest warrant for former NMSU basketball player DeShawndre Washington after he did not show up for his trial on felony sexual assault charges.

Washington faces multiple felony sexual assault charges tied to alleged assaults of former teammates and student managers at New Mexico State University.

Investigators said the alleged assaults happened during the 2022 through 2023 basketball season.

His trial was set to begin Monday in Las Cruces, but Washington did not appear in court.

Reports say Washington is playing basketball overseas, and the arrest warrant lists a Dubai address for him.

Washington pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
