Super typhoon Bavi forces evacuation of 2.6 million in East China

AKIPRESS.COM – Super Typhoon Bavi is pushing deep into the Chinese mainland after becoming the most powerful storm to strike eastern China since 1949, prompting the evacuation of more than 2.68 million people in Zhejiang province alone, Xinhua reported.

Heavy downpours exceeding 50 mm have drenched around 42% of Zhejiang over the past 24 hours. In response, local authorities have deployed over 19,000 emergency shelters, suspended all school classes, halted work at 830 construction sites, and closed hundreds of tourist attractions and high-risk entertainment venues due to severe flood and landslide risks.

To aid in disaster relief, China’s National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 100 million yuan ($14.71 million) from emergency funds to Zhejiang province. The typhoon is projected to move northwest and gradually weaken, though torrential rains are expected to hit Liaoning province early this week. Ahead of the storm’s arrival, the capital city of Shenyang has ordered the closure of all schools and kindergartens, banned outdoor public gatherings, and shut down local markets.
