Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra-time to win second World Cup

Spain have won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 following extra time in a tense final at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain’s second men’s World Cup title and their first since 2010.

The final remained goalless through 90 minutes despite Spain controlling much of the contest. Luis de la Fuente’s side created the clearer opportunities and repeatedly tested Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who produced several important saves to keep his team in the match.

Spain finally broke the deadlock when Torres volleyed home after Nico Williams headed the ball into his path. Argentina pushed for an equaliser but struggled to create clear chances, with Lionel Messi unable to inspire another late comeback as Spain’s defence held firm.

The match also marked the end of Argentina’s reign as world champions after lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022. Late drama continued when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off during stoppage time in extra time, leaving Argentina to finish the match with 10 players.

The victory crowns an outstanding period for Spanish football, following their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and the emergence of a new generation led by teenage star Lamine Yamal.

The expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, concluded after nearly six weeks of competition and set the stage for football’s next cycle ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
