Tonga Police have arrested a 41-year-old man from Ma’ufanga in connection with last week’s escape of detainees from the Central Police Station in Nuku’alofa.

The man was arrested on Friday and is accused of helping one of the escapees evade capture following the breakout last Sunday, as investigators continue inquiries into the incident.

In a media release issued yesterday, Police said the man had been charged with offences relating to assisting an escaped detainee. They did not identify which of the escapees he is alleged to have helped, adding that investigations remain ongoing.

The arrest follows a high-profile police operation launched after three detainees escaped from custody on Sunday 19 July. One of the escapees was recaptured within hours, while police later offered a reward for information leading to the capture of the remaining two men, warning they should not be approached because they were considered dangerous.

The final remaining escapee was subsequently taken back into custody on Friday, bringing the week-long search to an end. The investigation has since focused on whether others provided shelter, transport or other assistance to the escapees while they were evading police.

Police reminded the public that providing refuge, transport or any other assistance to someone evading lawful custody is a criminal offence, and those found responsible will face prosecution under Tongan law.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the case to contact emergency number 922, call 7401656, or report to their nearest police station.

The investigation remains active, and Police have not ruled out further arrests as inquiries continue.
