Semisi Sika of Tongatapu 2 and Lata Tangimana of Niua17 lost their appeals on their bribery cases in the election of 2025. This means there would be by elections for those two constituencies once they are unseated from Parliament.
In the other three bribery cases, the Appeals Court ruled that Taniela Fusimalohi of ‘Eua 11 is not guilty, and will continue to hold his seat.
The appeals brought by Tevita Tukunga against Seventeen Toumo’ua of Tongatapu 9 was dismissed. The Appeals Court also upheld the not-guilty decision brought by ‘Etuate Lavulavu against Viliami Latu of Vava’u 16.
The announcement today of these cases meant three representatives continue to occupy their seats, and two by-elections will be held for Tongatapu 2, and Niua 17.
