The Eastern Regional Team of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has engaged stakeholders and authorities in the district on the need to cut down on all forms of Illegal activities in water catchment areas.
Authorities engaged include, the Sierra Leone Police Regional Headquarters in Kenema, the Resident Minister, East and community stakeholders.
In an effort to bring to an end illegal activities including, but not limited to gold and stone mining, timber logging, deforestation, charcoal burning at various dams/water catchment areas at the Kamboi hills, a team of SALWACO staff, including, Braima Allieu- Regional Manager-East and Mary Mansaray Ngegba, Director of Communication, Gender and Outreach engaged and informed the AIG/Regional Commander of the happenings that were seriously affecting water quality in the district.
Mr. Allieu further expressed the significance of dams to Kenema especially the Nyandeyama New England dam which is under serious threat and which serves major government offices namely; the correctional center, fisheries market and other residential places.
The Regional Commander, AIG Meinday assured SALWACO of the SLP’s fullest support and also acknowledged that the Police sources water from the said dam and admonished that henceforth, they cannot tolerate it to be destroyed. He further attached to the Regional OSD Commander for the needful strategies and actions in ensuring that raids and arrests are made as and when violations occur.
SALWACO continues to engage authorities in making sure that Illegal activities are minimized if not eradicated in catchment areas; something that would be in the best interest of quality and safe drinking water provision/supply.
