In a vibrant display of innovation, creativity, and youthful ambition, STEM Fest Africa 2026 transformed the Freetown Innovation Lab into a hub of ideas and possibility, signaling Sierra Leone’s bold step into a technology-driven future.

Held at Kortright,Fourah Bay College field, the landmark event attracted over 1,000 participants, including students, educators, policymakers, private sector leaders, and international partners. The festival, organized by Freetown Innovation Lab, has quickly become one of the country’s most important platforms for advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Innovation as a National Imperative

Delivering a powerful address, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development emphasized that Sierra Leone’s future prosperity depends on investing in innovation and STEM education. “A nation that equips its children with STEM skills today is laying the foundation for economic sovereignty tomorrow,” he stated, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a tech-enabled economy.

Where Culture Meets Technology

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs highlighted the role of digital tools such as augmented and virtual reality in preserving Sierra Leone’s heritage while creating economic opportunities. Plans for a Culture and Creative Village were unveiled, inviting innovators to merge technology with culture in transformative ways.

Private Sector Driving Impact

As the event’s principal sponsor, Orange Sierra Leonedemonstrated strong leadership in youth empowerment. CEO Madam Aicha Touré called STEM “a catalyst for sustainable development,” noting that over 6,000 young people have already been trained through Orange’s digital programs.

Global Partnerships, Local Impact

In a keynote address, Ireland’s Ambassador, H.E. Patrick McManus, drew parallels between Ireland’s rise as a tech hub and Sierra Leone’s potential. He urged young people to see themselves as builders of the future, not just beneficiaries, stressing that inclusion—especially for girls—is critical to progress.

A Festival of Ideas and Action

Beyond speeches, the event showcased real innovation. Students presented projects in robotics, digital health, agriculture, and mobile technology,AI,Robotics,Recycling,Drones,Tech CarrearCorners,Mentorship impressing stakeholders with their creativity and problem-solving skills. For many, it was their first opportunity to engage directly with decision-makers an experience that could shape future careers.
