Labour Minister links Sierratel revival to hope, accountability, growth

 AYV News, May 7, 2026

A renewed sense of optimism marked the official launch of Sierratel on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, at the Miatta Conference Hall, as government officials, partners, and stakeholders gathered to witness the company’s relaunch.

Delivering a reflective address, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swarray, highlighted both the challenges and renewed promise of the national telecommunications company.

He recalled that Sierratel, once a thriving institution, fell into decline due to years of mismanagement, outdated systems, and financial constraints. Drawing on the vision of Julius Maada Bio, the Minister emphasized the administration’s determination to reverse that trajectory and restore national assets.

The Minister noted that previous efforts, including cabinet-level discussions and restructuring attempts, helped lay the foundation for the current milestone, even if earlier initiatives did not fully succeed.

He also commended the Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Salima Bah, for her role in driving the process, describing the relaunch as both a national achievement and a significant institutional turnaround.

Highlighting the human impact of Sierratel’s past challenges, the Minister acknowledged the hardship endured by staff and their families, stressing that the revival is not only about restoring services but also dignity and opportunity for workers.

Looking ahead, he underscored the need for stronger systems and accountability measures to safeguard employees, referencing labour law provisions that require employers to properly manage end-of-service benefits.

The Minister concluded that the rebirth of Sierratelrepresents more than a corporate recovery, describing it as a symbol of resilience, accountability, and a shared commitment to building a stronger Sierra Leone.
