Two suspects referred to prosecutors over forged legal documents and bank fraud

Suspects arrested after forged contracts and official documents seized in fraud investigation

Libya’s Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) has announced the dismantling of an alleged forgery operation after investigators uncovered a fraudulent power of attorney that was used to withdraw money from a bank account.

In a statement, the agency said the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Office uncovered the circumstances surrounding the case after determining that the suspects had impersonated a contract registrar who died in 2019 and used the deceased official’s seals to produce forged legal documents.

Investigators said a female suspect was arrested following an inquiry and was found in possession of several seals allegedly used in the forgery operation. Officers also seized recently forged contracts, along with a range of documents prepared for fraudulent use, including driving licences, vehicle registration booklets, tax payment receipts and company incorporation documents.

The agency said investigators also arrested a second suspect accused of supplying the forged documents to the woman.

According to the statement, both suspects admitted their involvement in the offences during questioning.

The Criminal Investigation Agency said the necessary legal procedures have been completed and the suspects have been referred to the competent Public Prosecution for further investigation and legal action.
