Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Culture, Information and Youth Policy will not support a proposal to build a cable way on the sacred Sulaiman-Too Mountain in Osh. Minister Mirbek Mambetaliev told journalists about the ministry’s position.

He noted that the initiative to build the cable way was a personal proposal by the city mayor. However, he stressed that such decisions must take into account Kyrgyzstan’s current legislation and its international obligations to preserve cultural heritage sites.

«He will receive a negative response,» Mirbek Mambetaliev said, adding that the country must comply with both national laws and international regulations.

«This is a sacred mountain, so we must preserve it,» he said.

The official said that building a cable way on Sulaiman-Too was «completely unacceptable.»

According to Mambetaliev, reconstruction and restoration work is planned at the site. The World Bank has allocated about 12 million soms for the reconstruction and restoration of Sulaiman-Too.

The Culture Ministry is also working to review the boundaries of Sulaiman-Too’s buffer zone. Kyrgyzstan has sent an official request to UNESCO regarding a reduction in the area of the buffer zone.

Sulaiman-Too is one of the main historical and cultural symbols of Osh and southern Kyrgyzstan. In 2009, the mountain was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a site of outstanding cultural and spiritual value.

Earlier, it was reported that Osh Mayor Zhanar Akayev proposed removing the sacred Sulaiman-Too Mountain from the UNESCO World Heritage List.
