Those are among the questions being asked by parents of students attending Burnt Savannah Primary School in St. Elizabeth.

Almost 10 months after Hurricane Melissa devastated the school, and the institution remains a shell of its former self.

With less than two weeks before the start of the new academic year, our news team visited the school on Thursday to see firsthand the dire conditions and speak with parents and members of the school administration.

Unsanitary, unbearable and dangerous.

That’s how parents of students attending Burnt Savannah Primary are describing the condition of the institution.

Tamara is the President of the Parent-Teacher Association, PTA, and has two children attending the school.

But she says, based on the current condition of the institution, she is uncertain where she will send them come September 7.

She says the bathroom situation, where students and members of staff are forced to use the same facility, is simply untenable.

Another parent, Kiana Powell, is also expressing frustration over the lack of repairs and the absence of the fixtures needed to make the school suitable for students.

Despite their concerns, some parents say the school administration has been doing its best to keep things going with the limited resources available.

One parent says she was told that workmen had arrived at the school to begin repairs, but there were no materials available for them to carry out the work.

With the new school year fast approaching, the parents are demanding urgent assistance and appealing to the Ministry of Education to intervene.
