NWC says drought conditions torrid in north eastern parishes

The ongoing drought is now impacting some of the National Water Commission’s NWC, north eastern systems.

This includes systems in St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland.

The NWC, in a statement on Wednesday, says several facilities in the three parishes are producing between 10 and 50 percent of their normal output due to the worsening drought.

Mahiri Stewart reports.

In St. Ann, the NWC says its Fort George is at zero percent operating status.

The Higgin Town facility is at 20 percent, while the Blackstonedge and New Hope facilities are at 10 percent.

The Chester facility, which supplies areas such as Spicy Grove and Nelson, as well as the Mount Zion facility both stand at a 50 percent operating status.

Over in the St. Mary, the Hunts Bay facility has the highest operating status.

As at August 26, it stood at percentage at 50, while Gayle Spring is at 45 percent.

The Lucky Hill facility is at 40 percent, while the Bonny Gate system, which services areas such as Preston Hill and new Road, is at 35 percent operating status.

Pembroke Hall is at 30 percent, the Crescent facility, which is responsible for supplying sections of Jacks Hill and Fontabelle, is at 20 percent.

The system with the lowest operating status is Fellowship Hall at zero percent.

In Portland, the Haining and Windsor Forest are the lowest in the parish at 20 percent.

Those facilities supply Belle Castle, Belmont Road, Commodore, sections of Long Bay and Fair Prospect.

Packi River number 1, which serves Hectors River, Flatgrass, Compound, Long Road & environs, Dillon, Grange Hill, Muirton Pen, Manchioneal, Sandshore, Forte and Barracks, is at 35 percent operating status.

And the Kensington facility is now at 50 percent.

The NWC is encouraging customers in these parishes to store water in clean, covered containers and have storage to last during the off-schedule periods.

It adds that water trucking services have been launched to assist customers who may not be able to be supplied through the pipes due to their location and elevation.
