The 7th World Convention of Cretans has opened in Chania, bringing together representatives of the Cretan diaspora from around the world to discuss the future of Crete and its global community.
The convention officially began on Thursday, July 23, at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Kolymbari, under the theme “Crete and the Cretans of Today and Tomorrow”.
Organised by the World Council of Cretans, the event brings together representatives of Cretan organisations, as well as figures from politics, academia, business and culture.
The convention aims to strengthen cooperation between Crete and Cretans living abroad, while developing proposals around the island’s economic, cultural and social future.
Events began on Tuesday, July 21, with a flag-raising ceremony at the historic Firkas Fortress, attended by representatives of Cretan organisations from Greece and overseas.
The ceremony was followed by the “Strata of Cretans Around the World” procession through the Venetian Harbour of Chania, featuring dance groups and delegations from the United States, Australia, Europe and Greece.
The event was organised in cooperation with the Municipality of Chania and included representatives of local cultural associations “Ta Sfakia” and “Psiloritis”.
The opening celebrations concluded with a Cretan music performance by Manolis Kontaros and his band.
The first day of the convention focused on the role of the diaspora in the development of Crete and Greece, with speakers highlighting the contribution of Cretans abroad to the preservation of the Greek language and cultural identity.
Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki delivered a keynote address titled “Crete in the World and the World of Crete”, followed by discussions on the role of the diaspora in Greece’s development.
Former minister Anna Diamantopoulou described the World Council of Cretans as one of the most organised networks of global Hellenism and said Crete could serve as an example of a new relationship between Greece and its diaspora.
Discussions also focused on younger generations of Cretans abroad and the need for educational and cultural exchanges, stronger Greek language programs and new ways for young people to maintain connections with Crete.
The convention also explored opportunities to link Crete with international networks in research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
A proposal was presented for the creation of a Global Innovation and Development Network of Crete, connecting academic institutions, research centres, businesses and Cretan scientists and professionals around the world.
The convention program also included workshops focusing on Cretan culture and identity.
The “Crete Remembers…” workshop examined oral history and cultural memory, with participants exploring migration experiences, family stories and personal narratives as ways of preserving the history of Crete and its diaspora.
An olive oil tasting organised by the Cretan Sensory Evaluation Laboratory and Terra Creta introduced participants to Cretan varieties including Koroneiki, Tsounati and Hondrolia.
A traditional dance workshop led by Sifis Papasifakis of the cultural association “Ta Sfakia” also explored the history and traditions behind Cretan dances.
World Council of Cretans president Nikos Kastrinakis said the convention was an opportunity for dialogue, cooperation and the development of proposals for Crete’s future.
He also highlighted the challenge of passing on the values, history and cultural heritage of Crete to future generations both on the island and across the diaspora.
The convention will continue with sessions on climate change and the environment, education and culture, inclusion, social responsibility and volunteerism.
