Greece deploys two firefighting aircraft Canadair

Greece has deployed to Spain two water-dropping Canadair CL-415 firefighting aircraftt as part of Greece’s aerial assistance to support operations tackling the major wildfires affecting the country.

According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the two CL-415 aircraft departed from Thessaloniki on Friday. However, due to adverse weather conditions, they made an intermediate stop in Aktio, western Greece, as a direct flight to Spain was not possible.

On Saturday, the aircraft departed from Aktio and landed in Sardinia, Italy, for refueling. Later on Saturday afternoon, according to a ministry announcement, they took off to continue their journey to Spain, contributing to the European effort to combat wildfires.

The deployment demonstrates Greece’s solidarity with countries affected by natural disasters.

The aerial assistance mission is being carried out through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), following a request from the Spanish authorities to the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC).

Meanwhile. today, Monday, also France has reportedly requested the activation of the European Union Protection Mechanism
