A new stricter law in Greece prohibits minors from the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) especially those below the age of 17 years old. The Greek Parliament will vote the new law introduced by the government regarding a stricter framework for electric scooters (e-scooters) especially for those chi8ldren and young teenagrers.
The new law for the use of e-scooters by minors became a necessity after the finding that the highest rates of accidents – and particularly serious accidents – are recorded in users under 17 years old.
The vote is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
Electric scooters: The 4 new regulations
The new framework provides for:
- Prohibition of the use of electric scooters by persons under 17 years of age.
- Mandatory insurance for all electric scooters and their users.
- Stricter penalties for violations, such as driving on roads where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h.
- Prohibition on companies from selling, renting or granting electric scooters to minors under 17 years of age.
At the same time, a special register of electric scooters is being created at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, so that it is easier to identify both the owner and the user of each vehicle.
“We now have a more complete legislative environment, especially for our minor fellow citizens, in order to protect their physical integrity and send the message that the protection of human life is an absolute priority,” noted Deputy Transport & Infrastructure Minister Giorgos Kotsiras speaking to media.
“The protection of minors cannot wait, Kotsiras stressed.”
He added that the basic obligations for all users of electric scooters still apply, such as wearing a helmet, prohibiting the use of a mobile phone or headphones while driving, while now mandatory insurance has also been added.
He also placed particular emphasis on tightening the penalties for those who use e-scooters on roads where their use is prohibited, such as roads with a speed limit of more than 50 kilometers per hour.
He pointed out that the new regulations are part of the government’s overall road safety plan, noting that the combination of stricter sanctions and intensive checks by the Greek Police has already contributed to the reduction of fatal road accidents.
PS it is interesting that there are no provisions for parents who are normally those who normally pay the money and purchase the e-scooters for their kids.
