Sokratis Famellos submitted his resignation from the presidency of SYRIZA-PS, confirming that he is not resigning as an MP or a member of the party.

He stated that he sees “unfortunately the same mistakes and the same personal strategies being reproduced, which led to the discrediting of SYRIZA-PS in 2023” and sent a message in all directions: “SYRIZA Progressive Alliance and the entire Left must serve unity so that the Right can leave, for the interest of the people.”

In his resignation statement, he said, among other things:

“I fought to unite the progressive and left-wing space, without having any personal ambition.

Because I believe in the values of the Left, in the power of collectivity, unity, in “we” and not in personal paths.

I fight for progressive convergence and synthesis, over time, in any social field, in whatever position I find myself.

My commitment to the cooperation of progressive forces was met with the refusal of PASOK and the New Left, who bear serious responsibilities for the fragmentation.

The resignation of Alexis Tsipras and the creation of ELAS constituted a significant change in the progressive space.

From the very beginning, we spoke about the need for convergence and unity, ruling out any possibility of confrontation.

With the decision of our Central Committee on June 6, we took a courageous step, which expresses the members and voters of SYRIZA-PS.

Let us support this initiative and work for a broad progressive convergence, so that the Right will fall and the ideas and values of the Left will find continuity.

Despite the great excesses we have made, the ELAS side publicly expresses its refusal to cooperate and converge, contrary to the urging of society, which demands unity.

Furthermore, disparaging comments are being made that belittle the ability of SYRIZA-PS and its people to contribute positively to the alignment of Leftist and Progressive citizens and collectives.

I have done everything possible to date to avoid this schism in the Left world, which takes away strength from the goal of a progressive solution and poses dilemmas for Progressive citizens.

At the same time, certain SYRIZA-PS executives have undermined our decision from day one, insulting democratic collective procedures, but also the will of the overwhelming majority of party members, with their sole aim of entrenching our electoral position and challenging me.

Unfortunately, the same mistakes and the same personal strategies are being repeated, which led to the discrediting of SYRIZA-PS in 2023.

I do not want and cannot be part of this division at this critical political moment in our country.”

Meanwhile, Pavlos Polakis and Nikos Pappas requested that Saturday’s Central Committee not be postponed.

“Now that Famellos has rightly resigned, as I had requested, its meeting is once again necessary! NO ONE can POSTPONE IT,” Polakis noted in a post, while for his part, Pappas said that “no one has the authority to postpone the Central Committee.”
