Libyan Security Forces Intercept 15 Trucks Smuggling Subsidized Goods

The Anti-Financial Crimes, Money Laundering, and Terrorist Financing (AFCMLTF) reported last Monday (2 November) that the Law Enforcement Department of the General Administration for Security Operations intercepted 21 trucks, along with their drivers, while they were transporting quantities of subsidized goods.

The individuals and the seized items were referred to the AFCMLTF for the initiation of legal proceedings.

Six trucks were released upon further investigation. However, 15 trucks proved to be heading to border destinations. This raised suspicions that domestic transport operations are being used as a conduit to move these goods toward the southern border regions, in preparation for smuggling them out of the country.

Consequently, following the completion of the preliminary investigation, the Agency’s Department of Investigation and Evidence Gathering referred the case file—along with the 15 detained truck drivers—to the Advocate General in Tripoli. This referral, made in accordance with jurisdictional authority, is intended for the completion of further legal proceedings and the investigation of the allegations brought against them.

The actions come pursuant to instructions from the Minister of State for Prime Ministerial and Cabinet Affairs—conveying directives from the Prime Minister—to take urgent and effective measures to implement and monitor the rising prices of flour and essential commodities.

These measures include tightening oversight over the transport, distribution, and storage of such goods, as well as intensifying inspections of manufacturing companies, factories, and storage facilities. The objective is to ensure the availability of these commodities in local markets, maintain price stability, and prevent any exploitation or illicit handling that would violate existing legislation and harm the interests of citizens.
