Authorities raid Phnom Penh scam site, detain foreigners

Synopsis: A law enforcement operation nets 20 Chinese and South Korean nationals, including six Chinese allegedly linked to fake job schemes targeting the United States.

Phnom Penh authorities raided a suspected online scam operation in Por Senchey district, finding 20 Chinese and South Korean nationals.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday at Block C of the Buon De Zhou condominium in Ta Ngoun 2 village, Kakab I commune, following instructions from Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng.

It was led by Deputy Governors Ek Khun Choeun and Pech Pharymy, with coordination from Phnom Penh Municipal Court deputy prosecutor Nhean Borey, according to a municipal administration report issued yesterday.

Among the 20 foreign nationals, authorities found that 13, comprising 11 Chinese and two South Koreans, were residing illegally in the Kingdom.

Another Chinese national was discovered using a forged passport, with the case handed over to the Por Senchey district police inspectorate for legal proceedings.

Six Chinese nationals were found to have allegedly engaged in online scams involving fake job offers targeting people in the United States.

Authorities confiscated 26 mobile phones, six laptop computers and three all-in-one computers as evidence.

The report did not clarify whether the six Chinese nationals suspected of running the fake job scam were among those found to be residing illegally, nor whether formal charges had been filed against them.

The municipal administration said the operation reflected the government’s commitment to preventing and suppressing transnational crime, particularly online scams that threaten public security and damage the Kingdom’s reputation.

Officials pledged to continue strengthening law enforcement to protect the public and prevent illegal activities.
