The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have held talks on expanding cooperation across food safety, standards and agro-processing to strengthen domestic production and improve export readiness.
The discussions took place on Wednesday during a farewell meeting between Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Hem Vanndy and outgoing FAO Representative to Cambodia Rebekah Bell in Phnom Penh.
Vanndy thanked Bell’s service since 2022 and highlighted the critical role of national quality infrastructure—including standards, metrology, laboratory testing and accreditation—in driving high-value agricultural production.
He noted that expanded collaboration with the UN agency would help local farmers and food processors adopt modern technologies, enhance food safety and retain greater economic value within the country.
Bell commended progress in local standards development, particularly the designation of the Institute of Standards of Cambodia as the national focal point for Codex Alimentarius.
She highlighted robust food control systems as a core priority for future partnership, emphasizing that technical enhancements will directly improve national nutrition, food security and trade capacity.
The two delegations also discussed technical assistance opportunities through Codex, bilateral agreements and regional frameworks. Additional focus was placed on attracting investment in fisheries, aquaculture and vegetable production technologies to reduce reliance on food imports.
Vanndy pledged continued ministry backing for these initiatives through research, technological integration and agro-processing support. MISTI
