Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to protecting biodiversity and implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) at the opening of the “Leaders for Nature” Global Biodiversity Summit in Armenia on October 16.
Addressing the high-level meeting, attended by heads of state, heads of government and leaders from more than 50 countries, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Sophalleth highlighted Cambodia’s achievements and strategic priorities in biodiversity conservation.
These include updating the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and integrating biodiversity conservation with climate change action.
He said Cambodia had taken a leading role in linking ecosystem conservation with climate change responses, recognising both as essential to environmental sustainability.
Through the implementation of its Circular Strategy on Environment, Cambodia has promoted reforestation to expand forest cover, increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, he said.
Sophalleth also highlighted Cambodia’s commitment to international cooperation, saying the Government recognised its responsibility to work with the global community to restore ecosystems, promote harmony with nature and advance sustainable development for the benefit of humanity.
