Prime Minister Dickon Mitchel has confirmed that Grenadians will go to the polls on November 5.
He made the statement today to THE NEW TODAY in response to a question about the circulation of a leaked Government Gazette giving the dates for Nomination of Candidates and also for the election itself.
According to the Grenadian leader, the leak is now the subject of an investigation. There are reports that the leak came either from the Office of Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade or the Government Printery, which is responsible for the publication of the Gazette.
The Prime Minister addressed the issue after alighting from a helicopter on the Fond Playing field in St Patrick from the sister isle of Carriacou where he took part in a ceremony earlier in the day to officially launch Tevin Andrew as the Congress Candidate to contest the seat on the sister isle.
Asked about the origin of the leak, he said: “I have to find out what happened. The Writ for the Dissolution (of Parliament) was issued on Friday, the Writ for the Election was also issued on Friday … and both things have to be placed in the Gazette and then one Newspaper.
“So as to what transpired I am not able to speak to that. Obviously, my role is merely to advise the Governor General and after that the people (Public Offices) will have to do what they have to do,” he added.
One of the first persons to release the Election Date was a female podcaster linked to the main opposition New National Party (NNP) of former Prime Minister Keith Mitchell.
The date listed in the leaked Gazette for nomination of Candidates is October 15.
THE NEW TODAY understands that one of the Government Offices that was privy to the date for the election has since sent an apology to Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell on the embarrassment caused over the leak of the Nomination and Election Dates.
Congress has said that it is going ahead with its planned event tonight to formally announce the election date at a Rally in St Mark with the use of Drone Technology.
About the launch this morning of Tevin Andrew on Carriacou, the Prime Minister said that there was a good turn-out of residents and Congress is confident of taking the seat on Election night.
He pointed out that it was a very energetic affair and had a large crowd especially on a Sunday morning when most people often use the occasion to go to church to worship.
“The fact that so many people came out is a clear testimony and endorsement of Tevin Andrew. I think Carriacou is in the bag but I am not counting until the count is actually done,” he said.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell was also asked if he had gotten a response to his invitation to engage other Political Leaders in a National Debate as part of the November 5, 2026 General Election.
He said: “I was told by the Press Secretary that there are two persons who volunteered to host the Debate at the Trade Centre – I believe Colin Dowe and Kellon Bubb. I am told that Peter David has responded yes – I am happy.
“Obviously my answer (to the debate) is a resounding Yes. I hope other Political parties and their Leadership will say Yes and come. I think it is important for us to raise the bar in Grenada and possibly debate policies, debate our credibility and let the public judge. I am ready for the debate – any day, any time,” he added.
Over the years, the NNP has often chosen not to allow its leader to engage in these debates on national issues.
