As monsoon activity begins to weaken across Uttarakhand, a noticeable shift in weather conditions is emerging. Bright sunshine during the day is bringing warmer conditions, while falling minimum temperatures are making nights increasingly chilly, particularly in the hilly regions.
Sunny weather has prevailed across the state since Sunday morning, with the Meteorological Centre forecasting dry conditions across Uttarakhand today.
Daytime Warmth, Cooler Nights
The contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures has become increasingly evident. According to weather data, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C on Saturday, around three degrees above normal. The minimum temperature, however, fell to 20.3°C, about one degree below normal.
The temperature variation is more pronounced in the mountainous areas. Compared with the plains, temperatures in the hills have dropped more sharply, while prevailing winds have further intensified the chill.
Monsoon Withdrawal Likely Between September 25 and 30
The weather pattern is expected to remain relatively stable over the coming days. The Meteorological Centre has forecast light rainfall in the mountainous districts through September 25.
The southwest monsoon is subsequently expected to begin withdrawing from Uttarakhand, with its retreat likely to occur between September 25 and September 30, subject to prevailing atmospheric conditions.
Uttarakhand Records 4% Excess Rainfall
Data released by the Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, for the period from June 1 to 8:30 AM on September 18 shows that Uttarakhand received 1,159.1 mm of rainfall, compared with the normal average of 1,118.4 mm. This represents an overall surplus of 4%, placing the state’s monsoon rainfall in the normal category.
However, rainfall distribution has varied considerably from district to district.
Bageshwar recorded the highest rainfall surplus, receiving 1,982.7 mm against its normal rainfall of 758.9 mm—an excess of 161%.
Several other districts also recorded rainfall above normal:
- Almora: 27% above normal
- Chamoli: 69% above normal
- Tehri Garhwal: 28% above normal
- Haridwar: 14% above normal
Pauri Records Highest Rainfall Deficit
On the other hand, Pauri Garhwal recorded the lowest rainfall, receiving just 675.2 mm against its normal of 1,226.6 mm, resulting in a 45% deficit.
Other districts that recorded below-normal rainfall include:
- Champawat: 26% deficit
- Nainital: 20% deficit
- Uttarkashi: 14% deficit
- Rudraprayag: 7% deficit
- Dehradun: 3% deficit
With monsoon activity gradually weakening, the coming week is expected to bring a clearer transition toward drier weather, warmer afternoons and cooler nights across Uttarakhand.
