MY TURN: The biological prescription schools are ignoring

In the ongoing debate surrounding America’s metabolic crisis, we have reached a bizarre cultural paradox. On one side, we are witnessing the medicalization of appetite: millions of adults are turning to GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic and Wegovy to synthetically force their bodies into feeling full. On the other, public health dialogue remains stubbornly fixated on lecturing individuals about willpower.
Lost in this noise is a fundamental, biological truth that nutritional science has understood for years: the human body already knows how to produce GLP-1 on its own.
The hormone that pharmaceutical companies are synthetic-replicating is secreted natively by specialized L-cells in our gut. As highlighted in recent reporting on gut health, these cells don’t require a weekly injection to function; they require the right nutritional signals. Amino acids from protein directly activate L-cells for immediate satiety, while fermentable, soluble fibers are converted by gut microbes into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, triggering a sustained, natural release of GLP-1.
If our bodies possess an innate, evolved mechanism to regulate appetite, why are over 40% of American adults and nearly 20% of American children living with obesity?
The answer isn’t a deficiency in pharmaceuticals — it’s an utter failure in early education. We are raising generations of children in a food environment designed to bypass their native hormonal signaling, and we are failing to teach them how their biology actually works. If we want to solve the national health crisis between kids and adults, we must start educating children in schools at a young age about metabolic science and food assembly.
The flaw of the “willpower” myth
For decades, basic health education in American schools has treated nutrition as a moral calculation: eat less, move more, avoid calories. This framework is not just outdated; it is biologically illiterate.
Ultra-processed foods, refined sugars, and stripped starches — the staples of the modern childhood diet — digest rapidly. They bypass the lower gut where L-cells reside, failing to trigger SCFA production or natural GLP-1 release. The result isn’t a lack of discipline; it’s a physiological system running on empty, causing rapid blood sugar spikes followed by severe metabolic crashes that trigger relentless hunger signals.
When we tell a child or a teenager to simply “use willpower” against ultra-processed foods, we are asking them to mentally override a primal, hormonal signal telling their brain they are starving. It is a battle human biology is wired to lose.
Why early schooling is the only viable intervention point
To break the cycle of childhood obesity carrying over into adult metabolic disease, nutritional literacy must become a core educational standard starting in primary school. Waiting until high school — or until an adult is prescribed a chronic medication — is a policy failure.
Habit formation vs. habit reversal — By the time an individual reaches adulthood, taste preferences, gut microbiomes, and insulin dynamics are deeply entrenched. Educating elementary school students leverages a critical window of neurodevelopment where dietary habits are formed rather than corrected.
Teaching “food pairing” over food deprivation — Children do not need to be taught fear-based diets or calorie counting, which often fuel disordered eating. They need to be taught structural food mechanics. Teaching a seven-year-old that pairing a carb with a protein or a fermentable fiber (like apples with peanut butter, or vegetables with yogurt) keeps their brain energized and their stomach satisfied replaces shame with agency.
Democratizing health beyond the home — Children cannot choose their socioeconomic environment, and millions live in homes where ultra-processed convenience foods dominate due to cost or time constraints. The public school system is the only institution capable of providing every child, regardless of background, with the scientific framework and daily practical exposure needed to navigate a toxic food landscape.
Re-engineering the school environment
School education cannot merely be a textbook unit once a year in physical education class. It must be a systemic, lived curriculum:
Science-backed cafeterias: School lunch programs must move away from ultra-processed, high-sugar, shelf-stable items and actively serve meals built on the satiety tripod: high-quality protein, complex fermentable fibers (cruciferous vegetables, legumes, prebiotics), and healthy fats.
Practical culinary literacy: Elementary and middle schools should incorporate basic hands-on food preparation into their curricula. Children who learn how resistant starches work (e.g., how cooking and cooling potatoes or rice creates digestive-resistant starches that feed good gut bacteria) view food as an empowering science experiment rather than a forbidden reward.
Gut health education: Demystifying the microbiome should begin early. Teaching kids that they are hosting trillions of beneficial gut microbes that need specific “foods” (like fiber) to produce satiety chemicals demystifies human physiology and instills a sense of body stewardship.
Education is the ultimate complement to medicine
GLP-1 medications are a groundbreaking medical tool for those with severe obesity or metabolic distress. But as dietitians and clinicians repeatedly warn, medication without lifestyle restructuring is a temporary bandage. When individuals stop taking synthetic hormones without changing their baseline eating patterns, weight regain is almost immediate.
We cannot inject our way out of a public health crisis, nor can we afford a future where an entire society relies on lifelong pharmaceutical intervention to manage basic appetite.
The human body comes equipped with its own internal pharmacy. It is time we give our children the biological blueprint to run it. By embedding modern nutritional science into primary education, we can raise a generation that doesn’t need a prescription to feel full — because they finally know how to feed themselves.
