The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) is to organise a specialised workshop on a sustainable public-private partnerships in the renewables sector.
REAoL is inviting interested parties to present visions and proposals, discuss opportunities for cooperation and investment, and review key challenges facing the sector.
It hopes the workshop will result in practical outcomes that support public-private partnerships.
New package of renewable projects announced
It will be recalled that REAoL and the Tripoli government announced that a package of new renewable energy projects will be launched soon. They also announced the implementation procedures for the 500 MW Sadada Solar power project have been completed.
The announcements were made last Wednesday (29 July) following a follow up meeting by the Minister of State for Prime Minister and Cabinet Affairs, Mohamed bin Ghalboun, with the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) on the progress of the implementation of the National Strategy for Renewable Energies.
The new renewable energy projects include programmes to provide electricity to mosques, administrative buildings and public educational institutions with hybrid solar energy technologies, which will support the public electricity grid and promote the use of renewable energy sources.
Background of power cuts
This meeting and its outcomes and the planned REAoL workshop come with the background of Libya experiencing very high summer temperatures, acute power cuts, blackouts, and angry demonstrations.
Demonstrators have blocked roads and highways with burning tyres and debris. They have also barricaded government buildings with building rubble and welded their gates to prevent employees resuming work.
The demonstrations included the brief storming of the Mellitah Gas Complex to force the shutdown of gas exports to Italy. This action was based on the misconception that gas exports were contributing to power cuts. The demonstrators have called for the government to resign over its mishandling of the supply of electricity.
These events have put the Tripoli Aldabaiba government under huge pressure and threatened to dislodge it from office.
The meeting also comes on the back of increasing criticism by commentators as to why the Tripoli government has not prioritised and expediated the development of Libya’s renewable energy sector.
