Mohamed Takala was re-elected as the head of the High Council of State (HSC) in elections held in Tripoli yesterday.

The HSC reported that the sitting secured a quorum of 138 members.

Takala won in the second round, securing 80 out of 137 votes in a runoff vote with his rival obtaining only 56 voted.

Naji Mukhtar was elected as First Deputy Speaker with 69 votes, while Omar Abushah won the position of Second Deputy Speaker. Belgasem Dabraz was also elected as the HSC’s Rapporteur, with 70 votes.

The election of Mukhtar and Abushah followed the re-election of Mohamed Takala as President of the High Council of State for a new term; he secured the position after defeating his rival, Belqasem Qazit, in a runoff vote with 80 votes to 56.

The HSC said the election was conducted in accordance with the regulations governing its operations and as part of the periodic process to renew the leadership bureau.

It said this step reinforces the HSC’s ability to fulfil its national roles and responsibilities, while supporting efforts to create the conditions necessary for holding elections and realizing the Libyan people’s aspirations for stability and prosperity.
