The vehicle struck a bridge railing before falling into the Hisor canal, according to Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry.

Two people were killed after a car plunged from a bridge into a canal in Hisor on July 19.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon on S. Rajabov Street, Tajikistan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.

According to the ministry, the BMW was being driven by 32-year-old Dilnoza Boymatova, a resident of Tursunzoda. While travelling from Dushanbe towards Hisor, she reportedly lost control of the vehicle.

The car struck the protective railing of a bridge over the Hisor canal and fell into the water.

Boymatova and her passenger, 37-year-old Dushanbe resident Fakhriddin Vohidov, died at the scene.

The Interior Ministry said an investigation into the accident was under way.

Video footage circulated on social media shows bystanders attempting to rescue the people trapped inside the vehicle.

The accident follows another fatal collision in Farkhor district, Khatlon province, on July 4, in which six people were killed.

That crash occurred at around 4:40 p.m. near the village of Bobosafol. According to the Interior Ministry, a 19-year-old Hyundai driver travelling from Vose district towards Farkhor lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Toyota Corolla.

Both drivers and four passengers sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.
