Four lawyers in Tajikistan fail certification, six lose professional status

Four lawyers in Tajikistn failed their professional certification in the first half of 2026 and were referred for retraining, while six others had their legal status revoked.

The figures were announced by the Ministry of Justice at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 21.

Deputy Justice Minister Zafar Safaralizoda said 131 lawyers had successfully completed the certification process. Another 17 did not appear before the qualification commission, and their assessments were postponed until the next stage.

Justice Minister Muzaffar Ashouriyon said the certification was intended to assess lawyers’ professional knowledge and qualifications.

“If a lawyer’s level of knowledge does not meet the required standards, how can that person properly defend others?” Ashouriyon said.

He added that insufficient knowledge of legislation and other regulatory acts could harm both individuals and legal entities.

“The purpose of certification is to maintain and improve lawyers’ professional knowledge and qualifications,” the minister said, noting that similar assessments are also conducted in the civil service.

The Ministry of Justice also reported growing interest among young people in the legal profession.

Of the 32 candidates who took part in the latest qualification commission session to obtain lawyer status, 18 were young specialists. Six submitted their applications shortly after graduating from university.

Under Tajikistan’s law “On the Bar and Legal Practice,” lawyers are required to undergo professional certification once every five years. The procedure assesses their knowledge, skills and compliance with professional requirements.
