Police arrest 9 DWI suspects in Santa Fe

The arrests happened over the weekend involving a variety of suspects.

SANTA FE, N.M. — Officers with the Santa Fe Police Department’s DWI Unit and patrol officers arrested nine people for unsafe driving over the weekend.

Police arrested four people Friday night into Saturday morning and five people Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Sometime after 10:30 p.m., officers arrested 19-year-old Christopher Hernandez, of Guatemala, for DWI after driving 81 mph in a 35 mph zone. A little bit later, they arrested 35-year-old Juan Carrillo Gonzales after a crash at Cerrillos Road and Calle de Cielo. They found he allegedly had a breath sample more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

A little later, at around 11:53 p.m., an officer arrested 39-year-old Ross Rivera for allegedly going the wrong way down a street where he was also driving above the speed limit. Rivera is accused of hitting multiple vehicles, almost hitting pedestrians and running away from police who eventually used a Taser on him.

He isn’t the only suspected wrong-way driver from those overnight hours. Police say 23-year-old Matthew Maestas now faces charges, including aggravated DWI, after driving the wrong way down Galisteo Street, near downtown, at around 2:12 a.m.

Saturday night into Sunday morning saw officers make five arrests. This included crashes at around 9:36 p.m. and around 1:12 a.m. Police arrested 35-year-old Juan Tema Cardona and 25-year-old Lorissa Pooyouma in those cases.

Police also arrested 26-year-old Lorenzo Luluja, 30-year-old Oscar Lopez Perez and 22-year-old Eswin Calderon Sanchez in the other cases.
