Mosquito control crews have begun spraying parts of the Athens suburb of Glyfada after a confirmed case of West Nile virus was detected in the area.

The Attica Region’s Mosquito Control Department started spraying at 6am around Zamanou Street, as well as sections of Iras, Ermou and Ariadnis streets.

Authorities said the operation is a precautionary measure being carried out in coordination with the National Public Health Organization (EODY) and the Municipality of Glyfada.

Warning tape and notices marked “CAUTION” have been placed at treated locations, with residents advised not to touch sprayed surfaces, including vegetation and other objects within the designated areas.

The mosquito control measures were introduced after EODY confirmed a case of West Nile virus infection in the wider area.

The Municipality of Glyfada said there was no reason for public concern and had notified residents in advance by placing notices at apartment buildings on affected streets on July 15.

Residents were advised to take precautions before spraying, including bringing clothes in from balconies and keeping pets indoors during the operation.

Health authorities said West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes and cannot be transmitted from person to person.

Residents have also been urged to reduce their exposure to mosquito bites by following recommended personal protection measures.
