A major fire at an auto parts business in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, left eight people injured on Thursday morning, with three in critical condition after being intubated.
The blaze broke out at the business, located at the intersection of Megaridos and Chios streets, prompting a major emergency response from the Fire Service. Seven of the injured were taken to Thriasio Hospital, while another was transported to Attikon Hospital.
According to the latest information, two of the patients being treated at Thriasio remain intubated, while three others suffered minor injuries and are expected to be discharged. Two additional people later made their own way to hospital, where they received treatment before being released.
The fire broke out under circumstances that remain unknown and quickly spread, sending thick black smoke across the wider area.
Authorities are also concerned by reports that a truck carrying a propane tank is located inside the premises, increasing the risks faced by firefighters.
An emergency 112 alert was issued to residents, urging them to leave the area.
“Fire in the Aspropyrgos area of the Attica Region. If you are in the Megaridos Street area of Aspropyrgos, move towards Aspropyrgos via Agiou Georgiou Street,” the alert read.
Major firefighting operation
A total of 75 firefighters, supported by 20 fire engines, were deployed to battle the blaze.
The operation also involved four specialised vehicles, including two aerial ladder trucks, a specialist refinery aerial platform, a breathing apparatus support vehicle and a helicopter.
Water tankers from the Municipality of Aspropyrgos also assisted with firefighting efforts. Investigators from the Western Attica Arson Investigation Unit have been dispatched to determine the cause of the fire.
Traffic restrictions were put in place on several roads, including:
- Megaridos Street, from Agiou Georgiou Street to NATO Avenue.
- Agiou Georgiou Street, from Chios Street towards Megaridos Street.
- Chios Street, from Agiou Georgiou Street.
