(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh if you pass through some of the rice fields these days, you might swear you walking through an international airport instead of a paddy bank. Long gone are the days when rice farming was just muddy boots, straw hats, and a man leaning on a shovel chewing cane.
Nowadays, dem boys seh, you got rice farmers with accents that could make you check twice if you in Essequibo or accidentally landed in Essex. One man out deh shouting “Aiyoh man, adjust the irrigation flow!” and you does be like, “Wait nah… since when Uncle Toma start speaking like BBC weather report?”
Dem boys seh the rice field now got more diversity than a United Nations conference. One fella come with gumboots cleaner than a Sunday church shoe, talking about “precision agriculture” while holding a phone fancier than the president’s. Meanwhile, old man looking on wondering if precision agriculture mean you plant rice with laser beam or you just very careful with your hand.
And don’t talk about the machinery. Dem boys seh one new operator arrive with a machine that got more buttons than a space shuttle. He press one and the tractor start singing, press another and it start reversing like it frighten of the mud. Old farmers watching say, “Back in my day, if tractor make noise like that, we used to run—not troubleshoot.”
But what really catching dem boys attention is how everybody suddenly become rice expert. One week man selling phone credit, next week he explaining soil pH like he write textbook on it. Another one who used to sell ice cream now talking about “yield optimisation strategies.” Dem boys seh even the rice getting confused—wondering who actually planting who.
Still, despite all the accents, gadgets, and fancy talk, the rice still growing same way—mud, sweat, sun, and stubborn patience. Dem boys seh nature don’t care if you speak Queen English or Creole. If you can’t handle mud, the field gon humble you real quick.
So next time you pass a rice field and hear ten different accents just smile. Dem boys seh: rice farming gone global—but mud still local.
