The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), through its Loss Reduction Department, conducted an exercise in Coverden, East Bank Demerara, to identify and remove illegal electricity connections.

Coverden is the fourth location targeted as part of GPL’s ongoing campaign to curb electricity theft as far as practically possible. Similar exercises will continue in communities across the country.

Illegal connections put additional pressure on transformers, feeders and other critical parts of the electricity network and can overload transformers and feeders. This can lead to overloaded equipment, equipment failure and power disruptions, affecting customers who are legally connected.

Electricity theft is also a serious safety risk. Illegal connections can cause electrocution and electrical fires, putting residents, GPL employees, emergency responders and property at risk.

GPL reminds the public that electricity theft is a criminal offence. Anyone found stealing electricity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

GPL will continue its loss-reduction exercises across the country to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of the electricity system.
