How Wyoming Teachers Can Encourage Summer Reading For Kids

How can you get kids excited about reading when they’re not in school during the summer? Offer them pizza! The Pizza Hut Book It! program is back, and the registration period has begun.

The program began when I was in elementary school, and I can remember how exciting it was to get one of those coveted free pizza certificates. To get one, all I had to do was read a certain number of pages per month. Simple.

Teachers in Wyoming can get their classrooms signed up, entice kids to read over the summer, and get a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut for doing so.

Here’s how it works.

English Language Arts curriculum teachers for PreK—6th grade students (ages 4–12) at your campus can enroll individually. We require that each teacher enroll only for the classes they personally teach and that students earn monthly certificates from only one teacher.

To get started, make sure your school is cool with the program, then visit the enrollment page or download the app (Apple or Google) to begin. The enrollment period runs in the month of May, and the summer program runs from June 1 to August 31.

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Teachers at accredited public, private, and charter schools who teach English Language Arts curriculum for PreK—6th grade students (ages 4–12), and enroll individually for their classrooms using their school-issued email.
  • Students may only participate through their primary classroom teacher and may only earn one certificate per month.
  • Parents homeschooling their own children may enroll in the BOOK IT! homeschool program.
  • Pre-K requirements: School must be accredited and have an approved Pre-K curriculum. Eligible students must be age 4 by September 1st.

Who is not eligible to participate?

  • Homeschool support/enrichment and co-op groups, where the student does not attend full-time
  • PTA/PTO groups or parents
  • Before/after-school programs
  • Campus enrollments (each teacher must enroll individually for their own classes)
  • Childcare/daycare/preschool and school/microschool programs at residential addresses
