The new building, designed by CMBA Architects, will assist the school district in keeping up with its growing population by creating flexible classroom spaces for up to 500 K-4 students.

Designed with flexibility and longevity in mind, the new Grinnell-Newburg Elementary School will feature grade-level-specific “neighborhoods” that group classrooms around shared learning areas. This unique approach supports collaboration and allows for easy reconfigurations of the layout as enrollment evolves. The new building is also designed to accommodate future expansions, ensuring that as the community grows, the school can easily grow with it.

“This new school will consolidate three aged elementaries into one state-of-the-art learning facility,” said Joe Copley, associate principal architect at CMBA Architects. “The flexible neighborhood design allows teachers the ability to tailor the space year to year as class sizes fluctuate, ultimately allowing the school to grow with the needs of the community.”

In addition to the flexible classroom spaces, the new school will include a competition gymnasium with seating for more than 200 spectators. The new gymnasium is intended not only to support students during the school day but also to serve as a venue for community events and activities.
