Berkeley and Stratford high schools stayed tied for the Region 7-5A lead in baseball with league victories Wednesday, April 15.
Stratford received home runs from third baseman Lucas Kline and pitcher Jarrett Wagner to knock off Cane Bay, 7-4. Wagner threw six innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out 11 batters in earning the victory.
Berkeley held on to edge Wando, 6-5. Stags pitcher Lucas Porcelli threw four earnings, allowing two hits and two earned runs in securing the victory. He struck out three batters, and helped himself at the plate with two RBIs.
Both the Stags (11-5-2) and Knights (14-5) improved to 7-1 in league play. After finishing up the current three-game series, the Knights and Stags clash in league play April 20, 22 and 23. Stratford hosts games one and three in a series that will likely determine the region title. The Knights are the defending league champion.
On Monday, April 13 in the series openers, the Knights rallied for a 7-6 win against visiting Cane Bay and Berkeley cruised past Wando, 9-2, at Jim Bradley Field.
Stratford plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within 6-4, then grabbed the lead on a three-run home run to left field off the bat of Kline. Wagner added two RBIs for the Knights and Dom Longello earned the win in relief on the bump. Longello threw three innings of one-hit ball and struck out six batters. He fanned the side in the top of the seventh after giving up a leadoff walk.
Berkeley built an 8-0 lead after four innings and out-hit the visiting Warriors, 12-2.
Outfielder Henry Montgomery knocked in three runs for the Stags. Pitcher Kobe Thomas hurled 4.1 innings of two-hit ball and struck out three batters. He allowed one earned run and walked four batters.
In the other league games Monday and Wednesday, Lucy Beckham blanked Goose Creek, 10-0, and cruised past the Gators, 27-6.
