The BSE Sensex fell 702.68 points to close at 76,847.57, while the NSE Nifty fell 207.95 points to 23,842.65 on April 13, 2026. Although the benchmark index initially opened with a significant decline, it later recovered. The stock market volatility was largely due to US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric. He threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz and block any country’s shipping from Iran if it did not comply.
The impact of Trump’s statement was clearly visible on the market. Index heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC, and Maruti saw selling. Rising crude oil prices have put pressure on the rupee.
The 30-share BSE Sensex opened at 75,937.16 points. It had closed at 77,550 on Friday. The National Stock Exchange’s Nifty 50 opened at 23,589.60 today. On Friday, it closed at 24,050.
Maruti was the biggest loser today, falling by nearly five percent. Other losers included HDFC, ITC, Bajaj Finance, Indigo, Eternal, and Titan.
Among the gainers were ICICI Bank, NTPC, and Axis Bank. The Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices closed down 0.54 percent and 0.38 percent, respectively.
Nifty Auto and Nifty Oil & Gas saw the biggest declines in today’s trading. The IT sector also remained weak. Nifty Metal showed some strength, and therefore recorded the least decline.
