PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema led tributes to Dr. Guy Lindsey Scott, describing him as “one of her noblest sons” who chose to serve Zambia despite opportunities abroad.
In a farewell statement, Hichilema said Dr. Scott, born in Livingstone in the then Northern Rhodesia and educated at Cambridge, Sussex and Oxford, “could have chosen a comfortable life anywhere in the world.”
“Though well endowed with opportunities, he chose to return home, put country before personal interest, and dedicate his life to serving the land of his birth,” Hichilema wrote.
The President said Dr. Scott served “with distinction, honour and humility” as a farmer, economist, Member of Parliament, Minister, Vice-President and Acting President.
He highlighted Dr. Scott’s role during “one of our nation’s most difficult moments,” saying he “provided calm, safeguarded our Constitution and helped preserve our peace” following the death of President Michael Sata in 2014.
Hichilema said Dr. Scott believed in “One Zambia, One Nation” and judged people “not by race, ethnicity or colour, but by their character.”
As the country approaches the General Election, the president urged Zambians to honour Dr. Scott’s memory.
“Let us honour his memory by rejecting division, embracing peace and placing Zambia above ourselves, just as he did,” Hichilema said.
“Rest in eternal peace, Dr Guy Lindsey Scott. The nation you loved will forever honour your legacy.”
