THE family of businessman Harry Findlay has confirmed he is in police custody following his detention Monday, and has appealed for urgent medical attention.
In a statement issued, the Findlay family said Findlay has not been formally charged with any offense.
The family said state authorities have been made aware of Findlay’s “serious” medical condition through medical reports and repeated requests to release his passport so he can travel for specialized treatment recommended by his doctors.
“Despite these requests, he has been denied access to treatment,” the statement said. “We therefore respectfully appeal that his medical needs receive urgent attention and compassionate consideration consistent with our Constitution, the law, and the humanitarian values that underpin our justice system.”
The family described Findlay as a husband, father and grandfather, and said many know him through his Facebook platform where he shares content on entrepreneurship, business and mentorship.
“Mr. Findlay has immense love for his country and is a law abiding citizen,” the family said.
The family emphasized Findlay’s right to the presumption of innocence and expressed confidence that “the truth will emerge through the proper legal process.” It appealed for Findlay to be treated with dignity and for decisions affecting his liberty and medical needs to be made “impartially, compassionately and in accordance with the law.”
The family also asked the public and media to exercise restraint and avoid speculation while authorities carry out their work.
“While we respect freedom of expression, we ask that public discussions remain civil and respectful. Hurtful and abusive remarks have profound impact on our children and grandchildren, who are living through this painful experience alongside us,” the statement said.
The family thanked the public for messages of support and prayers, saying they have “strengthened us immensely during this difficult time.”
Police had not commented on the matter or announced any charges by press time.
