Wyoming Road Conditions Deteriorate, FRIDAY!

Starting in the early morning hours on Friday, April 17th, 2026, Wyoming road conditions were already deteriorating as a fast-moving cold front, with snow, moves across the West.

Winter Storm Warnings from the National Weather Service remain in effect through Friday for several key areas popular with backcountry travelers and recreators.

According to WYDOT, Wyoming roads face hazardous conditions, particularly in the northwest, due to a winter storm bringing heavy snow and strong winds.

The hardest hit areas should be the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, Yellowstone National Park, and the Wind River Mountains.

Forecasters are projecting total snow accumulations of 9 to 18 inches, with the highest elevations potentially seeing up to 20 inches before conditions improve.

Yellowstone National Park openings scheduled for 8 a.m. were delayed to noon due to 12 inches of heavy snow and whiteout conditions, specifically impacting the West Entrance to Old Faithful, West Entrance to Canyon, and Mammoth to Norris.

Many highways, including I-80 and I-90, are experiencing slick spots, with winter-related closures expected.

Interstate 80: A Snow Squall Warning was issued for April 16, impacting the area from Rock Springs to the Bitter Creek Rest Area (30 miles west of Wamsutter), with whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 35 mph. The Bitter Creek Rest Area is closed eastbound.

Teton Pass & Northwest WY: A winter storm warning is in effect until Friday evening (April 17), with 9–18 inches of snow expected in the Tetons, leading to deteriorating conditions on Teton Pass and Togwotee Pass.

Seasonal closures are in effect for sections such as WY 130 between Mirror Lake and Green Rock.
