CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – The City of Canton responded to a recent act of gun violence that left a woman injured.
According to police, multiple shots were fired at the Brooklyn Mart store on Washington Street just before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
Witnesses said two suspects jumped out of a vehicle and opened fire at someone who was entering the store. Police said a parked vehicle was hit by several bullets, and a woman inside the car was grazed by a bullet.

“I actually heard the shooting. I was not that far away. And so, I was on the scene pretty quickly. And what I saw was just another example of how bold and brazen these small group of criminals here in Canton have gotten. Obviously, this was in the middle of the day. There was a middle school graduation going on nearby. But these guys, they don’t care. They don’t value life, and they don’t respect authority,” said State Rep. Lawrence Blackmon (D-District 57).
He believes Tuesday’s shooting and prior incidents are gang-related. He said he’s provided information to federal and state officials with hopes of finding solutions that will turn the city around.
The shooting remains under investigation.
