INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou won the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.
He’s been dominant in the IndyCar Series, winning the last two championships and has won five of the first six races to start the 2025 season.
But one thing he had never done was win the Indianapolis 500, or even win on an oval track. He was able to cross the Yard of Bricks in front of the field on Sunday though, winning his first Indy 500.
He shared when it became reality that he had won the Indy 500.
“I would say probably kissing the bricks because that’s probably a little bit later, probably like 45 minutes after you win the race, one hour, you get to relax a little bit,” Palou said. “You’re not screaming and you can kiss it with your team, with your family. And that was a moment that just having that flavor of dirt on my mouth, that was an amazing flavor by the way, I was like, ‘Man, we did it.’”
Palou won the Indy 500 in his sixth start in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” He won the pole in 2023 and had three top five finishes before winning the Indy 500 on Sunday.
Palou started the race in sixth and led for 14 laps.
He became the first driver since Simon Pagenaud in 2019 to win both the Sonsio Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year.
Palou’s sights now turn to the Detroit Grand Prix, where he looks to win his fourth straight race. The Detroit Grand Prix is scheduled for June 1.
