STATEWIDE–Indiana ranks second among the best states for trick-or-treating in 2026, according to a study by Kuru that compared all 50 states on factors including walkability, pedestrian safety, weather and Halloween interest.
The study found Indiana has some of the strongest Halloween enthusiasm in the country, based on Google search interest. Children also make up 23% of the state’s population, while the average Halloween temperature is 62 degrees.
Indiana received a walkability score of 38 out of 100 and a pedestrian death rate of 1.23 per 100,000 people.
Wisconsin ranked No. 1, followed by Indiana and Iowa. Ohio and Illinois rounded out the top five.
Kuru evaluated states using five factors: walkability, pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people, the percentage of residents younger than 18, average Halloween temperatures and Google search interest.
Wisconsin’s pedestrian safety score and Halloween search interest helped it claim the top spot.
Eight states from the 2025 top 10 remained in this year’s rankings. Wisconsin climbed from third to first, while Iowa rose from seventh to third. Massachusetts and Texas joined the top 10, replacing New Hampshire and Michigan.
The Midwest performed particularly well, with six states from the region landing in the top 10.
