UNL and Kansas State University honoring Greg Sharpe during Husker basketball game

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Kansas State University (KSU) are coming together to honor the late sportscaster Greg Sharpe.

Sharpe joined Nebraska Athletics and the Huskers Radio Network in 2008. He was a sports announcer until he passed away in February 2025, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The students are doing a special radio broadcast of the Husker men’s basketball exhibition game on Oct. 26.

The broadcast will be done by KRNU, The UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications’ campus radio station.

The exhibition game between Nebraska and Kansas State has been named “The Greg Sharpe Scholarship Game,” highlighting Sharpe’s namesake scholarship fund.

The scholarship is named the Greg Sharpe Sports Broadcasting Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund will go towards a student at KSU and UNL, as it highlights UNL COllege of Journalism and Mass Communications and the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at KSU.

“Greg had the kind of career that anyone in the sportscasting business would envy,” said Bill Doleman, assistant professor of practice who oversees KRNU’s sports broadcasting program. “To be the play-by-play voice for two major athletic programs is an amazing career achievement. More importantly, he was beloved by both fanbases. Whether you knew him personally or only by listening to him on-air, Greg had a way of making everyone feels like you were his friend.”

Tipoff is at 6:30 p.m. at the Big Iron Events Center in Grand Island.

The broadcast will be streamed online, or can be heard on 90.3 FM.
