It hasn’t exactly been a state secret at Houchens-Smith Stadium during fall practice – Rodney Tisdale Jr. was very likely going to be the Hilltoppers’ starting quarterback for Saturday’s season opener at Nevada.
WKU head coach Tyson Helton finally confirmed as much Monday during his weekly news conference, as Tisdale reprises the QB1 role he took over for injured Maverick McIvor last season and never relinquished until an early injury exit from the Hilltoppers’ bowl game against Southern Miss allowed McIvor a chance at a successful final appearance in leading his team to a 27-16 victory.
McIvor has graduated now, and Tisdale beat out veterans – Florida State transfer Brock Glenn first among them – and youngsters alike in the Tops’ quarterback role to claim the starting job.
No big secret, maybe, but still nice to hear for the redshirt sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida.
“It felt pretty good, but obviously my job’s not done,” Tisdale said of Helton’s announcement. “There’s still a couple things I’ve got to learn myself. Brock’s behind me 100% of the way. He’s got my back through it all. So as long as we build together and keep that strong relationship and that strong bond in the QB room, it’s gonna be all right for everybody.”
Tisdale got a jump on leading the offense last season. When McIvor exited early in a 25-6 home loss to Florida International on Oct. 14, Tisdale performed well in relief action with a 7-of-8 passing night. The next week, Tisdale was starting under center and led the Tops to a 28-27 overtime road win at Louisiana Tech. It was the first of three straight Conference USA wins with Tisdale starting at quarterback for the Tops, with that run ended by a hard-fought 13-10 road loss to LSU. During that win streak, Tisdale threw the game-winning two-point conversion pass against La Tech, tallied season highs of 30 completions and four touchdown passes against New Mexico State and passed for a season-high 371 yards along with three TD passes and another rushing score in a win against Middle Tennessee.

Tisdale, who started the final six games last year, finished the season 139-of-212 passing for 1,432 yards and nine touchdowns. Also a threat running the ball, he added 108 rushing yards and two TDs.
Helton said Tisdale continued to show during fall camp that he’s ready to lead the Hilltoppers on the field.
“Rodney will be the starter,” Helton said. “I felt like all the quarterbacks competed well throughout camp, but Rodney’s full body of work from spring all the way to now has qualified him to be the starter. I want the starter to feel comfortable that he’s the starter. And I’ve told Rodney that, but I do feel good about the quarterback room as a whole. We do have guys that I think if something happened to Rodney, I think they could come in. I think Brock Glenn will be ready to go if his number is call. I’ve always (had) a quarterback-driven team. I want the starting quarterback to know that he has the keys to the car and that he’s driving the car and it’s his game.
“And Rodney’s had experience with that and that’s helped him up to this point. Rodney also knows, hey, he’s got to continue to play at a high level. He’s got to continue to develop. You come in now as a sophomore quarterback, there’s higher expectations there for you. Just biggest thing is do is job – do his job and manage the football team. He’s done a good job up to this point and throughout practice doing that. Again, I thought the quarterback room did a really good job of pushing him. But once I make a decision on a starter, it’s his car to drive and he’s going to be driving that car full time and looking forward to watching him play.”
Tisdale is certainly ready to take those keys, even with a new offensive coordinator tuning up the offense. Bodie Reeder, also the Tops’ quarterbacks coach, arrived from MTSU after former WKU OC/QB coach Rick Bowie departed after last season to take the same role at UTSA.
“First of all, he’s a great coach – we’ve got a great relationship with each other,” Tisdale said of Reeder. “He calls me each and every day to see how I’m doing, see if I’m comfortable or not. Overall I feel like the play calling that he calls and I guess the system around WKU, it’s not really so much of a difference. It’s still, I wouldn’t say Air Raid, but we still call similar plays.”
Tisdale is far from the most vocal player in the locker room even now as the Tops’ established starting quarterback, with Helton comparing him to another quarterback he coached in the past at USC – Sam Darnold, a longtime NFL quarterback now with the Seattle Seahawks. Darold was a quiet leader, preferring one-on-one talks with his teammates over rousing speeches. Helton sees the same attributes in Tisdale.
“Everybody leads in their own way,” Helton said. “First you lead by your execution on the field. That’s how you lead. You lead yourself and you lead the football team by your execution. But there are times where something needs to be said or you need to make sure that you get your point across and we all have our own way of doing that. I feel Rodney’s doing a better job of that. You know, when you’re a young guy it’s hard. You’re just worried about yourself, you want to go out there and play, let the older guys take care (of it). But now he’s growing into more of that leadership role.
“Rodney’s always going to be himself. He’s a guy that I don’t expect to give hoo-rah speeches and all that kind of stuff. He’s a guy that’s going to say, ‘Hey, I need to talk to this receiver’ or ‘I need to talk to that o-lineman.’ And it’s going to be on a one-on-one deal. I like that in a quarterback, to be honest with you. But he’s still growing and kind of becoming that guy for us. But he has come a long way in that area.”
Tisdale has become more assertive as a leader for WKU, but that hasn’t dimmed his willingness to listen and learn from his teammates. That’s a trait redshirt senior tight end CC Ezirim, in his first year with the program as a transfer from Toledo, has appreciated in Tisdale.
“It’s been pretty good,” Ezirim said. “He loves being around all the guys and as a young guy, he’s very receptive to listening to what everybody is trying to put into him in terms of information and you know, what we want here, what we want there. We’ve had a really good connection so far – love for it to get better, you know, I’d love to get the ball more and more, but I feel like he’s been doing a great job.”
Tisdale said he’s tuned out the noise of swirling expectations this season as he prepares to lead the WKU offense. That starts Saturday night in Reno, Nevada. The Tops will face the Wolf Pack in the season opener starting at 9:30 p.m. CT with the broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
“I’m just ready to ball out,” Tisdale said. “I know them boys are ready too. We’re just excited.”
